Key Learning Objectives

Operation: Climate Control is designed for Key Stage 4 students learning about climate change for their GCSEs. The game isn't going to teach about the scientific link between carbon dioxide emissions and climate change, that is assumed. The game concentrates on the impacts of climate change, and what can be done about it.

Given that assumption, the things students are going to learn about climate change are:

  • Where does CO2 come from? They will get an idea of how much CO2 comes from national energy use, from personal energy use, and from personal transport use.
  • What are the impacts of climate change? They will be shown a wide range of real and potential impacts of climate change, from the local up to the global level. They will also get an idea of the kind of things we can do to adapt to climate change.
  • What can we do about it? Within each scenario, the player will become familiar with a range of mitigation options, from the personal up to the national level. They will also be able to compare directly these options with each other, and get an idea of how much they cost, relative to each other.
